Methodology for Defense and Strategic Study

This course aims to prepare students to conduct and write a research project in Defense and Strategic Studies that are multi-disciplinary in nature. To this end, it will expose students with a variety of methodological principles and approaches, conceptual and theoretical tools, methods and research techniques essential for undertaking research on various issues and aspects of defence related to security, international relations, strategic and the military in nation-state, regional and extra regional contexts. It will familiarise students with various principles and skills in conducting research such as formulating a research design, identifying research problem, formulating research questions and research objectives, determining research scope dan research significance, conducting literature review, determining key concepts, suitable theory (if any) and variables, developing analytical framework and hypothesis or assumptions as well as choosing methods for data collection and data analysis. Research ethics will also be taught to the students. Students will be assessed based on assignments and a research proposal that will be presented during research colloquium
