OPERATIVE DENTISTRY
Operative Dentistry can be defined as the art and science that relates to the diagnosis, and treatment of those defects of teeth, which do not require full coverage for rehabilitation of form, function and aesthetics while maintaining the integrity of the adjacent soft and hard tissues of the oral cavity. It has been recognized as the foundation of dentistry and the base from which most other aspects of dentistry evolved.
2. COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is the continuation of Simulation Operative Dentistry course and will be carried out for ONE (1) year; i.e. in year 3. Students will get to apply the basic principles of the preclinical Simulation Operative Dentistry course into practice. However, the practice of operative dentistry does not end in Year 3 as students will continue to treat patients throughout the clinical years.
Teaching and learning activities of this course involve combinations of lectures, seminars, Problem Based Learning and Clinical Project Presentations. The course assessment consists of TWO (2) components: continuous assessment (50%) and Final Professional Examination (Part 3) at the end of Year 3. Continuous assessment includes progress test, Dental Educational Projects, Clinical Portfolio (Part 1) and Semester 1 (Year 3) test. Passing of continuous assessment (25%) is mandatory as a pre-requisite for students to sit the Final Professional Examination (Part 3).
3. COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the end of the course, students must be able to:
1. Describe the principles and practice of clinical examination and contemporary diagnostic methods in formulating comprehensive treatment planning in operative dentistry and endodontics.
2. Describe the principles and practice of restorative procedures including endodontics and aesthetic restorative therapy.
3. Explain the principles of infection control and demonstrate a working knowledge of safe operating procedures.
4. Implement preventive and restorative management competently with appropriate ergonomics.
5. Display good patient management including development of a caring attitude in providing preventive and curative restorative treatment.
6. Recognize the professional, ethical and legal responsibilities towards patients and community.
7. Apply critical thinking in decision making for delivery of restorative care.
8. Utilize information technology resources in developing clinical portfolio and Dental Educational Projects.
