NATION AND NARRATION: ASIA

This course provides students with the opportunity to study postcolonial literatures in English from countries in the Asian region. Students comment on and interpret key issues in the works of writers residing in these countries, which include the importance of native language/mother tongue after colonialism, search for identity and sense of belonging, the importance of the individual to a community, experience of colonialism, concepts of gender and power in cultures from Asia, as well as negotiating history and tradition in a modern society. The representation of the society’s culture and history by each writer will form important aspects of discussion.
