LANGUAGE AT THE WORKPLACE

This course examines the nexus of language, culture and communication at the workplace. It looks at communication in corporate and professional settings in relation to vocabulary, linguistic forms, patterns of language and discourse. Using case studies of workplace settings, students will observe and discuss the way language is used among workers at junior executive level to effect oral communicative tasks such as negotiating, persuading, disagreeing and turn taking at meetings, and common written communicative tasks as memos, e-mail and short reports. Listening and reading skills at the workplace will also be highlighted. Students’ learning will evaluated via project work, simulations of negotiation and meeting and assignments.
